Bernier and Voynov
According to a Pierre LeBrun blog “A source told ESPN.com Friday that the Los Angeles Kings have spoken with about 10 clubs about Bernier’s availability. It wouldn’t surprise me if he’s traded before or at the draft.”
You’re reading that correctly – the KINGS have contacted 10 teams, not the other way around.
Who are the likely 10 teams who need a starting goaltender?
Minnesota or Pittsburgh?
It doesn’t look like the Kings are going to get that much needed 1st round draft pick, nor will they likely get a top prospect. Plus, they’re going to have to sign a Free Agents back-up for Quick, and who is gonna wanna play just 10 games a year?
Lombardi isn’t going to just giver Bernier away as he was a #11 pick whom the Kings have developed. Those who don’t think he has enough “experience” only have to look at what the Flames gave up for their #1 starting goaltender Mikka Kiprusoff who had LESS experience than Bernier when he was dealt, by Lombardi, from San Jose.
My prediction: Because I’m always right: Bernier and Martinez to the Flyers for Read or Schenn and Coburn. (Only if Read signs an extension as he’s a UFA after next season, but he’s 27 and small and not a DL/DS type of player)
According to an article in this morning’s Russian newspaper, it seems a Voynov deal is close:
“We haven’t given them an answer yet,” he said. “But I won’t hide it, Slava is leaning toward Los Angeles. After all, he’s been in the Kings system for five years and everything in the organization suits him.”
Leaning. As opposed to what, taking 9 million a year to play in Russia?
The Kings are in cap trouble even before they start to negotiate with Scuderi who is looking for a 4 year deal. Chances are he’s dealt to the Islanders for a late draft pick so they would have exclusive negotiating rights. He’s a much better fit there that Streit.
Should the Kings lose Scuderi, this would be a HUGE blow to the Kings defensive corp as well as veteran presence with no guarantee that Mitchell will return. Scuderi held this defense together and there’s an extremely weak crop of UFA D-men out there.
Hopefully Bernier will get back a 3.5 million dollar D-man (maybe the Flyers will deal Coburn?)
Internet is abuzz that he’s been signed.
