From Millionaire to Unemployed
After making 2.8 million last season, Dan Cleary turned down a 3 year deal with Detroit, then found himself considering a try-out with the Flyers and eventually took over a million dollars LESS to stay with Detroit.
Damien Brunner is still looking for a team.
Ron Hainsey made 4.5 million last season and it wasn’t until Pitkanen went down with a season ending injury he took less than HALF of what he made last year just to skate in the NHL.
Chad Larose made 1.7 million and is without a team.
Johan Hedberg backed up Marty Brodeur at 1.4 million and is now on a tryout with the Rangers
Brad Boyes scored 10 goals and 25 assists for a million and still hasn’t found a job.
According to CapGeek, there are currently 39 players who made a million dollars or more who won’t be collecting a paycheck. Granted some of them are too old (Langenbrunner, Sullivan), and some of them just flat out suck (Redden, Wellwood), but some of them are at least worthy of league minimums (Steckel, Prospal).
Can you imagine collecting a hefty paycheck like that and then all of a sudden you’re making McDonalds like wages scouting. It’s not like the majority of hockey players have college degrees they can fall back on.
Dean Lombardi trades the 1st round pick he got from the Mike Cammalleri deal AND his other first round picks to the Ducks (who selected Jake Gardiner) to select Colten Teubert. Colten Teubert is not only unemployed, but his American fiancee recently delivered their first child after they skipped out on their bills. STORY
