Is Darryl Sutter Really That Great?
In the regular season, Darryl Sutter has coached 98 games for the Kings.
He’s won only 52 of them. (an overtime LOSS is still a LOSS)
Those kind of numbers would normally warrant a trip to the unemployment line, but instead, the overachieving Kings won a Stanley Cup.
Did they do it in spite of Sutter?
Did they catch fire at the right time?
This season will be THE tell-tale sign of how good or bad Darryl really is. It will be his FIRST full season. He won’t have “The Piece” and will have to rely on players like Muzzin and Martinez to pick up the slack.
He was the right coach at the right time for the Kings two seasons ago and he certainly provided the motivation they needed after Terry Murray put them to into a coma with his coaching.
But is this the year they tune out Sutter?
As great as Lombardi wants to credit Sutter for his days in San Jose, a quick check of the statistics finds 434 games coached but only 193 actual wins.
Sutter will always and forever go down in Kings history as the coach who won the Stanley Cup.
Hopefully its not his last.
