It Ain’t Working With Toffoli, Pearson, Vey
Not yet anyway.
It’s not like when the Kings shocked everyone by bringing up Dwight King and Jordan Nolan ahead of everyone else and they stepped right into the line-up and started banging bodies.
But Dwight King made a difference, scoring 5 goals and 9 assists in 27 games, and chalking up another 5 goals and 3 assists in the playoffs. Jordan Nolan chipped in as well and both were able to withstand the physical aspects of the game, especially during the playoffs.
But the New Kids on the Block have been more like N’Sync.
Tyler Toffoli was a 6 furlong horse running in a 1 mile race. He simply pooped out. Call it the Oscar Moller syndrome. Linden Vey certainly looked good in his first stint in the bigs and time will tell whether he sticks with the club or is part of a future trade. Tanner Pearson has also been thrown into the fire and so far hasn’t been dominant, but hasn’t looked like Colin Fraser either.
All of this means Lombardi needs to make a trade.
Probably more than one.
The Kings don’t have a 3rd line. Period. They still don’t have a 2nd line left wing. The 3rd and 4th lines didn’t score LAST year and they’re not scoring THIS year. That’s going to have to change if the Kings are going to get past the Ducks!
But what players fit the mold of Lombardi’s, “Right fit?”
As I mentioned before, Andrew Ladd would satisfy the marquee. He’s not a big scorer by any means, but he’s a money player who will chip in 12-15 goals in Sutter’s system, and he knows HOW to win (something he hasn’t done in Atlanta or Winnipeg).
Danny Briere is slight, nobody wanted him and I’m told Carter and Richards have made their pitch to Lombardi.
Matt Moulson will be a hot commodity and the Kings won’t give up the asking price I’m afraid.
Personally, I think the Kings should do whatever they can to acquire David Perron. The guy is a warrior, has 17 goals (which would lead the Kings), plays hard but the only drawback is the 3.8 mil price tag for the next 2 seasons.
Montreal is not going to trade Max Pacioretti without a significant return. Jiri Hudler has wonderful connections at Golds gym (maybe Sean O’Donnell is putting in a good word) but he’s short and makes too much money.
R.J. Umberger is a former Flyer so he NATURALLY has to be considered.
Ray Whitney is 41.
I think Zenon Konopka would be a major upgrade over Colin Fraser (better in face-offs and fights)
Ben Scrivens finishes his stint with the Kings with a 1.97 GAA, .931 SV% and 3 shutouts, all are Top 5 in the NHL. – My grave concern is “who backs up Martin Jones if Quick gets hurt?” That’s a pretty scary thought if you ask me. JF Berube has been nothing short of awful in Manchester.
Now if Lombardi could only get something for Matt Frattin…
That’s two deals in January for Dean! (Carcillo the other)
So the Kings busted up the Canucks so badly they didn’t have shit left for Anaheim. And guess what? The IDIOTS were out in full force again! I hear Vancouver fans were so upset, they set fire to themselves.
In the original Toronto deal for Jonathan Bernier, Toronto included their 2nd round pick to the Kings.
Or did they?
In actuality, Toronto had the OPTION of the pick being in 2014 or 2015
In the deal they made to Anaheim for Peter Holland, it was “conditional.” The pick for Holland was a 3rd round pick UNLESS Holland played 25 games for Toronto. He’s played 24.
Looks like the Kings will have to wait until 2015 for that 2nd round selection (which they NOW might include in a trade)
Kings scout Alyn “I ripped off Lombardi with that 3 year contract” McAuley scouted the Habs the other night and last night he attended the Toronto/Sabres game.
