Jarome Iginla and the Kings?
Eklund and RDS’ Renaud Lavoie and Dave Pagnotta of TFP are saying the Kings are very interested in signing him. Pierre Lebrun said the Kings were the 3rd team behind Boston and Pittsburgh whom Iginla would have accepted a trade to at the deadline.
Okay, you COULD argue that the money they’re saving on Penner and Scuderi could go to sign Iginla, but then the Kings still have a gaping hole on defense with no money to spend.
I know, Lombardi has failed and failed and failed to land that big ticket free agent since his arrival. Chara spurned him for Boston (a wise choice for Z), Gaborik wanted to sign here but took 5 years in NY (they then traded him to Columbus). Martin spurned him for Pittsburgh (where he’s been not worth the 5 mil they’ve been paying him), Kovalchuk is about to make 11 million in cash in NJ (dodged a bullet), Brad Richards may be bought out (but I think the Rangers are stuck with him and A.V. will get the best out of him).
So what makes ANY of us think, now that the Kings have finally proven this is a place free agents should come to, that Lombardi is going to make a free agent splash?
He doesn’t have to.
He did it through trades. He overpaid for Penner, he overpaid for Mike Richards and he overpaid for Jeff Carter. It worked out. It worked out VERY well.
But going forward the Kings have to get better. They have to score more goals in Sutter’s defensive minded system.
Will it be with Jarome, who turns 36 in just a few weeks? Quick, name a 36-37-38 year old who is worth 6-7 million? Not many… if any.
Isn’t he a right winger? (played LW with the Pens and did play LW with Theo Fleury)
Don’t we need LEFT wingers?
Iginla WAS coached by Sutter in Calgary, so maybe…
