Kings Get a GEM With Zykov
His name in Scrabble could be worth 130 points!
Everyone was wondering why Valentin Zykov hadn’t been selected. Apparently so did Futa and Yanetti and the Kings traded their 3rd, 4th and 5th picks to the Oilers to get him. (Told you Lombardi would make a deal. He ALWAYS makes a deal!)
He was ranked 15th by ISS
He was the CHL rookie of the year which has been won previous by Sidney Crosby, John Tavares, Patrick Kane, Taylor Hall and Nail Yakupov. Okay, so did Benoit Pouliot, Matt Ellison and Patrick O’Sullivan (and look how THAT turned out).
Hockey News had him ranked 31st and had this to say:
Zykov is a Russian more suited to the rough-and-tumble North American game.
Most of his success comes from his size. His ability to protect the puck stands out, as does his willingness to go to less friendly areas of the ice. “He’s big and he’s thick (that’s what my wife says about me, WHOA!) so when he’s not going into those areas, he’s not going away.” Said a scout. “This kid is already really strong for his age and he has some real offensive ability.”
Zykov will face the same questions all Russians do in draft these days, but his willingness to play in a small market in Quebec to develop his North American game will go a long way towards answering those. And his skill level makes him worth the risk.
He has a good shot, a quick release and solid instincts around the net with a hunger to score. “The kid is working his tail off and he’s producing,” another scout said. “There’s a lot to like there. He has a great work ethic”
With the 103rd pick, the Kings selected Justin Auger. I have no idea who he is other than his twitter which states, Number 20 for the Guelph Storm, occasional student at the University of Guelph. He went from 71st to not even ranked. Then again, Wayne Simmonds wasn’t ranked either. He’s 6’6″ so at least he’ll be tall.
Then they took the 56th ranked player in Hudson Fasching, a 6’3 RW – it doesn’t help when it says “Scouts are a little disappointed in what they’re seeing. He’s a 10 goal scorer and I can find 10 goal scorers anywhere” But he does have a great Hollywood story and I’ll be calling his agent Monday for the rights to make it into a movie.
So basically, he fits right in to Sutter’s style.
Brendan Klak tweeted “nice pick” when talking about the Kings 1st #5 pick LA: (G) Patrick Bartosak – Who is Brendan Klak again?
F John (or Jonny) Brodzinski (who was passed over TWICE in the past 2 drafts) was taken 148th overall. Here’s a profile: http://www.westerncollegehockeyblog.com/2013/5/30/4378488/2013-nhl-draft-prospect-jonny-brodzinski
Then there was D Zach Leslie from the Guelph Storm
191st pick Los Angeles selectes Sudbury Wolves import LW Dominik Kubalik 191st overall.
How is Alec Martinez still a King?
Would you have traded Bernier to New Jersey for the 9th pick? Vancouver fans are all over Nonis for this one but think about this: 1) Schneider sucked in the playoffs 2) Nobody wanted Luongo’s contract.
Vancouver did just fine.
Would Vancouver been happer with Frattin, Scrivens and a 2nd?
All this talk about Luongo… just give him 5 minutes with Torts and he’ll be fine.
Of all the trade talks (like half the league!), there were very few.
Glad Clutterbuck is no longer inn the West
Glad Bolland is in Toronto
How the hell did Al Murray get a job with Tampa Bay? Big balls not taking Jones. I have a feeling years from now I can blast Murray for this one too!
Does ANYONE have Hankook tires?
