Puck Daddy’s Report Card
I actually had an article about the New Jersey Devils all planned, but Puck Daddy changed all that today with his free agent report card.
In that report card he wrote:
New Jersey Devils
When Lou is good, he’s very good: Michael Ryder for 2 years and $7 million is very good. Patrik Elias back for three years and a $5.5 million cap hit shows that Lou’s Kool-Aid remains strong. Rusty Olesz for 1 year and $1 million … sure, whatever. Shedding Henrik Tallinder’s salary was a plus as well.
When Lou is bad, it’s usually in reaction to someone leaving the Devils: When Niedermayer left, it was Malakhov and McGillis. When Clarkson left on Friday, it was 5 years and $24.25 million for Ryane Clowe, a player I believe is sliding on the downside of his career like a snowboarder trying to avoid an avalanche.
Los Angeles Kings
The Kings lost The Piece, Rob Scuderi, to the Penguins and checking winger Brad Richardson to theVancouver Canucks. They re-signed Keaton Ellerby for one year and inked Jeff Schultz, who was bought out by the Capitals, for one year. Schultz is, as they say, not good. But hey, they’re still in the “pulling Matt Frattin for Bernier” afterglow, so …
Devils B- and Kings D???
Okay, lets break this down.
He applauds the Patrick Elias re-signing yet completely ignores Slava Voynov’s very affordable resigning
Ryane Clowe couldn’t hit the back of the net with San Jose, and signs a 4 year 4+ million contract? Holy shit! Every reporter called it the single worst free agent signing of the day. Yet the Devils are a B-? Oh yes, Clowe replaces David Clarkson.
Yet the Kings replacing Rob Scuderi with a guy that’s “not good” is bad?
But lets go further.
He loves to talk about how great Lou Lamoriello is but correct me if I’m wrong but the following year after the Kings won the Stanley Cup, the Kings resigned all of their players and they went to the 3rd round against the Stanley Cup Champs.
The Devils didn’t make the playoffs.
The Great Lou couldn’t re-sign his own Zach Parise and this year David Clarkson.
The Kings have everyone signed.
The Great Lou is paying Ilya Kovalchuk 11.3 million dollars in salary. Way to go Lou!
The Devils will have to forfeit their 1st round draft pick this season. I’m praying they finish dead last.
Yo, Matt? Where’s the Bud Holloway Signing? Looks like Bud doesn’t want a 2-way contract and may wind up back in Europe
What, no Dustin Penner signing? Looks like the league is smart after all.
What, no Eric Belanger signing?
I wasn’t at development camp but I love the comments from those that did go.
“Weal can’t skate”
“Weal looked awesome”
Yes, we know nothing.
I don’t know about you but I’m still a bit miffed as to why Iginla didn’t want to come back and play for the coach that got his to the farthest point in his career? It’s not like the Kings couldn’t figure out a way to afford him, and its not like he wouldn’t be good in the locker room. You can’t say he’s not a Dean Lombardi, “right fit” and he would be great in the playoffs as well.
The Kings, in my opinion didn’t do enough to get “better”. They needed to get tougher as both San Jose and St Louis both gave them a run for their money. They needed to make a splash on defense as well. Relying on Willie Mitchell to play an entire season is just assinine in my opinion. The dude, on that knee, isn’t going to last 100 games. Lombardi didn’t address the woeful lack of scoring, which finished 12 out of 16 in the playoffs (in all fairness, the Kings were 10th in the regular season.
