Trade Before or After the Olympics?
Trade before, you get the jump on everyone else, but you also have to pay 15 days worth of salary for taking a vacation during the Olympic break.
Trade after the Olympics and prices start to go down.
The Kings need to be better. Right now they’re simply a below average scoring team in a tough division. 11th in goals for ain’t gonna cut it THIS year (it worked 2 years ago as the Kings were the 1st team in NHL history to be at or near the bottom on offense and win the cup… it doesn’t happen again)
But who are the Kings going to make a deal with? Let’s take a look:
Lombardi has made several deals with Jim Rutherford (Jack Johnson, Kevin Westgarth)
Tuomo Ruutu is the obvious target but he’s having a dreadful year with just 4 goals and 8 assists and a horrid -16 plus/minus. All this for a severely overpriced 4.75 million this year, next year and the year after that. Carolina would love nothing more than to get rid of this contract. I don’t think anyone takes a flyer on him and he’s bought out.
IMO, not a Lombardi type of player.
Don’t even think Jiri Tlusty. If the Kings wanted him, the could have had him. They passed.
So there have been many deals with Edmonton, but those were mostly with a former GM. But Williams, Stoll, Greene, Penner all came from Edmonton. Is there anyone on their current roster worth overpaying for?
David Perron. But Edmonton isn’t about to trade one of their best players for nothing. If they did, look for Kyle Clifford to be included as the Oilers need to get bigger and tougher.
Forget Evander Kane. Just forget about it. That headache in Los Angeles with its Playboy Mansion temptations?
Andrew Ladd makes perfect sense, but I think another team will severely overpay for his services.
I love Steve Ott. He’s a pain in the ass. If he goes to San Jose or St Louis, the Kings are gonna be fucked if they have to play those two teams (again). I think Anaheim (with many high draft picks and solid prospects) are going to outbid the Kings for many of Buffalo’s players.
Yes, there’s lots of Matt Moulson talk, but unless Lombardi REALLY wants him (i.e. overpay like he did for Carter and Penner) he’ll have to give up several big prospects.
I honestly believe Zenon Konopka is a MAJOR upgrade over Colin Fraser (better hitter, fighter, face-offs, scoring) and that would be the player the Kings should focus on.
Unless its for a defenseman, I don’t see the Kings and Isles dealing at all (although I love Matt Martin)
As much as Lombardi admires Lamoriello, Lombardi also knows that if Lamoriello is making a deal with him, he’s getting ripped off, so there won’t be any deals between these two GM’s. So don’t even think Jagr. It’s just not a Lombardi “fit”
They have lots of delicious pieces of the puzzle, but does Dallas want to trade in their conference? Out of all the deals Lombardi has made, how many have been in the division? 1 out of the last 22 player swaps. Conference? Carcillo, Colin Fraser, Dustin Penner, Freddy Modin, Jack Johnson… so 5 out of the last 22.
Ray Whitney is old but he held Lombardi hostage several years ago when he HAD a deal for him with Phoenix but because he had a NMC he wanted a TWO year extension (which he got in free agency from Dallas ) but Lombardi was only offering one. He’s a veteran. He can score, but unless Lombardi can forgive Whitney for screwing him over, I don’t think this happens.
If its going to be ANY player from Dallas, look for Lombardi to make a pitch for Trevor Daley. Ultimate warrior. Easily replaces the soon to be departed Matt Greene. He’s signed for 3 more years at 3.3 million so he fits in to Lombardi’s “budget.” THIS is the guy I think Lombardi goes after and goes after hard. Daley was signed BEFORE Jim Nill took over. Look for Daley to be moved. Period.
Erik Cole is completely useless. Don’t even think about it.
Alex Goligoski wouldn’t be bad either.
They’re going to be the most active and if you look at Dale Tallon’s trade history, he also doesn’t deal in-conference, so San Jose likely winds up with Tomas Fleishman, Anaheim winds up with Mike Weaver or Ed Jovanovski and the Kings? Nobody.
They’re going to go through an overhaul, but is there anyone the Kings would want that Nashville would be willing to trade (Like Josi for instance?) I don’t think so.
What would be the price for Mark Giordano? Pearson, Vey AND Toffoli? I might even have to consider it (you won’t… not for a second). The guy is money. He hits like a freight train, scores, and is the total Lombardi package.
It is NOT going to happen with Cammalleri. Lombardi would rather stick needles in his eyes than to bring back that selfish oompa loompa.
Maybe they would like to take Matt Frattin back. No, not interested in Kadri. Every TV show I see he just comes off dumber than a character on Spongebob.
