What’s The Move That Puts The Kings Over The Top?
During Dave Taylor’s tenure, he made some pretty shitty deadline deals. Cliff Ronning, Anson Carter. Mark Parrish and Brent Sopel. Nothing blockbuster that catapulted the Kings to anywhere near a Stanley Cup.
Taylor never did give up the farm for a player like Dustin Penner. Instead, he decided to KEEP the likes of Pushkarev, Anshakov, Justin Papineau and Scott Barney
Taylor’s drafting is arguably (and we’ve argued a lot over the years) not as robust as Lombardi’s. He (and that slug Al Murray) never saw talent like Dwight King and Jordan Nolan. As a matter of fact, in Dave Taylor’s entire nine year tenure as GM, here is his calling card AFTER the 1st round who played 100 games or more: (Looks more like a fight club than an NHL team.)
In just FOUR seasons, this is what Lombardi and his staff have produced
My guess is Lombardi is in the market for some veteran defense as Sutter admitted in his after-morning-skate interview… “With Robyn and Willie, they give you everything they’ve got, but they’re not kids. And in our schedule, when you’re pushing those guys into low 20’s, it affects their game, and it affects their performance on back to back nights. We’d seen it last year with Scuds when we used Scuds too much because we didn’t have Robyn yet, and we didn’t have Willie, and those kids weren’t giving us what we needed, and we saw it last year with Robyn where his game dropped off. It’s the same thing. If we start pushing Willie and Robyn too many minutes, they’re not as effective.”
They don’t quite have the confidence yet in Manchesters’ Bodnarchuk or Schultz, or even Campbell whose development stopped shorter than a Volvo into a brick wall.
Matt Greene looks like he’s toast and WHEN he gets hurt in the playoffs, the Kings will be even thinner.
UFA Robyn Regehr cost the Kings TWO 2nd round draft picks. What do you think the market for a veteran defenseman is going to cost the Kings THIS year?
Even more, as the Ducks just lost Sheldon “I’ll show you my penis” Souray for the season and will have his salary to spend. Pittsburgh’s defense has been a M*A*S*H* unit this season and of the crappy draft-lottery teams with defense, how many are you think they’re actually willing to deal? (I’d love Mark Giordano, but he’s a Brian Burke type player so he ain’t moving).
Who do you trade for?
