Which Matt? Frattin or Martin
We all know Bernier is going to be dealt. It’s like that moment when a girl takes off her clothes in your bedroom.
Toronto and the Islanders seem to be the front runners as the Flyers can’t make up their mind about Bryz, Read isn’t enough and Coutourier is too much and Homer doesn’t want to hand the Kings another cup.
Rumors I’ve heard from semi-reliable post apocalyptic sources are:
TOR: Matt Frattin and Toronto’s 1st round pick (21st)
NYI: Matt Martin and the Islanders 1st round pick (15th)
All indications are Frattin > Martin, but the Islanders draft pick is lower.
Martinez may be included in both deals as well for an additional draft pick… because apparently paying him a lot of money to be a healthy scratch isn’t what Lombardi has in mind
I asked on the HF boards for fans to share their thoughts about both:
MATT FRATTIN – TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS
“Frattin is a strong two-way forward who is good finisher. He’ll succeed if you give him a playmaker and post him on a slot. I wouldn’t trade him, but if we want Bernier, he’d have to be part of the deal.”
“I’ve always thought of him as a faster, more physical Michael Ryder. Has a fantastic shot, skates very well, very tough to knock down, but he doesn’t create enough offence for himself. Will be most effective with a playmaking centre who can get him the puck. Capable defensively, very streaky offensively. Needs to find consistency. Most effective when he plays physical.”
“You’d love his shot, you’d like his skating and physicality, you’d hate his tunnel vision. And yeah, he can play both wings. I like his shot on the left side more tbh. It seems he kinda likes it too because he tends to go that route when it’s open so he can get one-timers.”
MATT MARTIN – NEW YORK ISLANDERS
“He’s not nearly as good offensively as Lucic and many people here overestimate what he can do. His passing isn’t great, his hands aren’t great, he’s big and physical, and does well in the corner on the forecheck. But, without being a great passer, shooter, or having good hands…he will never fit on the top line. He’s fantastic in the 4th/3rd line role.”
“He’s coming along fine. No need to try to make filet mignon out of ground beef when you can have a really good hamburger instead. He’s effective in the role he’s in.”
“Martin can be a much better player than he is today. I think his hands and vision is much better than he’s given credit for. I think it’s hurt his offensive development by not being in the AHL longer, earlier in his career and playing a 4th line energy role in the NHL. His game is hit everything that moves and get off.”
“Martin has the ability to change games, watch the games…his on ice presence is key, the bad guys know when he is on the ice and take notice. The Isles top six need revamping to win consistently, using Lucic as a comparison is somewhat wrong..Marts is skilled/smart/tough..lucic at best is a poor skater…yet his ability not to be moved out front is the only real comparison. When the Isles play a point shooting game, tough in the corners etc….Martins value is obvious.”
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m a MM fan, but we as a fanbase have overrated him for a while. But that’s normal-EVERY fanbase overrates the gritty/”heart” type players. Martin in no way, shape, or form is top-six material in the NHL. He’s no offensively gifted enough. He’s a great 4th liner-and a good 3rd liner, and that’s about it.”
“Martin is a very efficient player despite his lack of offense. He is not the kind of guy who will lose position to make an open ice hit because I think he is very defense-minded and does not like taking stupid penalties. He always finishes his checks though and wont pass up on a chance to lay someone out if it is the right thing to do at that moment. Martin’s priorities probably go something like this… “
Martin Tags Wayne Simmonds!
Doesn’t look like Jordan Nolan returns next season.
A-Mart being shopped as well
